So your thinking about getting a new set of poi toys but don’t know where to start, well first of all some of you may want to think about home-made poi which are relatively simple and better yet inexpensive to construct - Click here for D.I.Y tutorials, If you carry on reading you will see that i have put together a list of the different kinds of poi as well as adding some general information about each one to help you decide whats the best for you. Practice poi / Sock poi / Soft poi The most common of all poi sets would be practice poi, they are generally home-made using some old socks, bean bags etc, Practice poi however are also quite cheap to purchase, being built to last longer, look better, come in a range of colours and in some cases even UV reactive, it doesn’t matter if your starting out or been spinning for a while – everybody should have some practice poi lying around. Glow Poi Also mostly home-made, glow poi are simply a set of glow sticks attached to the end of leash, normally an old shoe lace these are so simple to make and better yet disposable, glow poi are the heavy ravers ideal toy as they look cool, easily used for free hand glow sticking and as the glow sticks only last a few hours it doesn’t matter if you lose them. Maori Poi These are the more traditional poi, being made out of rope and sometimes with tassels, these poi are generally used for story telling via poi and group performances, not ideal for the raver but if by any chance your going to be on stage at a hotel dressed up as a hula girl these are probably the poi for you - See what is poi for more information. Flag Poi Often seen at kite flying festivals and other day time events, flag poi are pretty much how they sound, having a triangle type flag attached to a swivel and handels, these do add quite a bit of drag to your spin and tend to be used by children or women. Tail Poi Also known as ribbon poi, Tail poi are quite similar to flag poi in a way but instead of being attached all the way down the leash’s they are only attached at the top, also giving a slight drag to your spin these poi are often seen performed by women at many public family events. Club Poi Generally used by professional performers in there shows, club poi have a simple leash with the end weights being of a juggling club like nature, professionals can be seen having knifes on the end, foot long L.E.D’s or as mentioned juggling clubs attached, pretty much anything which has a heavy weight to it and some length. Pendulum Poi Having a large ball for the weighted end and a small one for the handles, pendulum poi have a slight thicker and stiffer rope for the string attaching the weights to the handles, this makes them ideal for stalls and other moves of that nature. L.E.D Poi or Flow Poi Anybody who is serious about their spinning and loves to party, these are the essential toys for your raving arsenal, with durable leash’s and handles, these poi have flashing & bright L.E.Ds on the end with a decent weight for all kinds of spinning, coming in a range of shapes, sizes & colours, these are sure to dazzle any other party goers around you, unfortunately there are so many bad & faulty versions out there, that’s why we always suggest buying flow lights, these L.E.D poi have the most advance technology and are super durable perfect for wraps and accidental bangs, you can buy your flow lights from Flow Toys.com – use are discount! Fire Poi The reason many people start spinning, being made of kevlar which is wrapped round a weight these poi have chains attached to them for obvious reasons, Although fire poi is very alluring, mystical and generally bad-ass, a word of caution; you play with fire your going to get burned, people always over look the dangers so my advice to you is not to even think about fire poi until you have got more fluent with your practice poi and done plenty of the right research. - for more information on fire spinning click here! Please note depending on where you purchase your poi toys there might be slight variations in appearance and functionality, the above list is just a guide to the different kinds of poi and not the different models of each kind, we recommend when buying your poi you do so from a professional retailer, check our affiliates for the best in the business!

If you have found yourself reading this you have more than likely asked yourself the question “What is poi?” or maybe you just wanted to find out a little bit more of the history side of things, well either way i think that this is a really good question, for me to answer this you must first know that poi can refer to both the performance art itself or the tools needed for involvement of the practice, Poi is taking the world by storm for being its own unique and elegant performed art form, poi generally consists of swinging a pair of tethered weights through an assortment of rhythmical and geometric patterns but to be honest it’s so much more than i can put into words. Traditional poi Proven to of originated from the Maori people of New Zealand, Poi is still something widely practised there today, In the actual Maori language, poi can either mean the objects used by the dancers, the choreography of the movement or even the accompanying music. In old Maori culture, a poi performance is something that was normally associated with women, who used it as both and art form and relaxation technique but even more so practical as to help them transfer the skills for weaving. If you believe the legends of old it was in fact first the men of the Maori tribes who used it, not only to strengthen their body’s but also their minds as these essential skills were an excellent way of preparing for any possible upcoming battles the tribes may have had to face – Recent academic studies however have so far found no supporting evidence of this, which has resulted in some ongoing debates amongst the modern & traditional poi community. Traditional poi themselves were hand crafted by stripping down and weaving together native plants of the area. They were also made in to either, long poi having strings equal to the length of your fingertips to your shoulder-blade or short poi having strings equal to the length of your fingertips to your wrist. The poi generally did differ in construction & design being affected depending on the tribe, regional area and also personal preference. Most native performances using poi include the telling of a story via song, the actual choreographed movement of the poi spinning and are also often presented alongside with many other practised disciplines such as ancestral war cry’s. Modern Poi Poi over the years has gained quite a large following world-wide and with this being said the development of poi culture has led to a substantial evolution of the styles now practised and even the tools used, enjoying a much broader spectrum of possibilities modern poi still perfectly coexists with some principles of traditional poi. Unlike the traditional poi performers, modern poi artist’s do tend to spin individually and do not tend to act, dance or sing at the same time. Although there are many well-known poi artist’s out there who are trying to bring back some of the values and aspects traditional poi holds so as to incorporate them with modern poi performances, by promoting things like group spins and even holding poi retreats the world of poi is always evolving. Many people first encounter poi in the alluring form of fire spinning, but fire spinning is just one element of this highly varied art, Modern poi borrows significantly from many other physical arts such as object manipulation and modern dance, Poi is regarded to be a state of flow and mediation as well as a performance and is now practised by thousands all around the world and can often be seen at raves, events and other festivals. Unlike so many other physical arts, learning poi does not usually involve any kind of formal education but as mentioned earlier there are some that hold workshops and retreats where you may learn this art. Since the rise of the internet most spinners now learn from others online by visiting websites such as our own or by watching instructional video’s and DVDs. Thanks to the internet there is now a stronger sense of community and self-teaching when it comes to that of modern poi, it has directly fuelled the popularity of modern poi by helping people around the world learn about it or even discover it for the first time, with the advances in technology amongst other things, today’s poi are created using a source of much more varied materials resulting in better durability, effects and popularity. Poi artist’s everyday are pushing the boundaries and bringing us awesome performances and better yet video, most spinners as us speak about finding healing properties to spinning poi, bringing a sense of inner peace at least for a short while, using spinning as a form of meditation and training has benefited thousands and that’s why we think this art will continue to flourish. - If you have enjoyed this article please like, share and leave your thoughts.

One question I hear a lot with regards to fire spinning is what type of fuel should I use, and to be honest there isn’t just one answer I am aware of, I don’t really know a great deal about fuels as of yet but this is what I do know – if anybody would like to add to this post feel free to email me, Basically any kind of flammable fuel may be used to spin fire and even breathe it. 1. The popular choice for most back yard spinners is some kind of white spirit or turpentine substitutes this is simply because its cheap and easily available from most stores and people do normally tend to have it lying around in their garden sheds or garage, these type of fuels do tend to have a medium flash point and a long burn-time but with that makes it more dangerous as any ignited fuel can cause problems fast, not only that but with a nasty smell and plenty of smoke they leave so much residue on your wicks the flame will start to feed on them after the fuel is gone which means they wont last nearly as long as they would if you used other fuels. 2. Another popular choice for back yard spinners is denatured alcohol or methylated spirits which are much cleaner than the above resulting in less residue, commonly used as the choice fuel for mixing flame dyes with, so you can add some colour to your spin that being said this fuel is rather expensive and wasteful so i personally only use it once in a blue moon. However if you get speaking to some more avid and professional spinners they will more than likely tell you they use one of the following: 3. The main one i know of is one you have probably heard of, Kerosene also know as paraffin, is used by many as it has a low flash point and lights pretty much instantly, it does have a much shorter burn time compared to most other fuels. This fuel although smokey and smelly does seem to only leave a small amount of residue on your toys which is always a plus when trying to make them last as long as possible, you may also find that if the weather outside is chilly it does tend burn for a much shorter time and in some cases light more slowly, kerosene is said to be the prefered fuel for breathing as the chance of block back is slightly less than other traditional fuels and having the bonus of being rather cheap normally a few litres for a fiver this is also my first choice at the moment. 4. White Gas also known as Camp Fuel is another commonly used fuel for various fire flingers. It can always be found in most outdoor & camping stores as well as large D.I.Y stores, Out of all the fuels fire performers use white gas is said to be the cleanest burning which makes it ideal when performing indoors as it emits the least amount of smell and smoke, That being said it does have a wickedly low flash point which means it will pretty much light instantly which may be awesome when it comes to your toys but not when it leaks onto the floor or worse your cloths, you need to be extra carefull when spinning of the excess fuel when using white gas so a spin bucket is a must. 5. A more traditional spinners fuel is Lamp Oil you can buy this at most dare i say it hippyish type stores. Lamp oil has a high flash point so does tend to light a lot more slowly than the others but on the plus side it does have a much longer burn time compared to most other fuels, many say this fuel is probably the best when used outdoors because due to the smell and smoke that it emits you wouldn’t want to use it in a confined space. Since lamp oil ignites best when it is oxygenated and in the air it tends not to ignite when on the floor in a puddle and for that reason it is considered a much safer option to use. which also makes it an often chosen choice for many trained fire breathers. Before deciding what fuels best for you, test them out maybe try mixing them for a better balance of cleaner burning and spin time, a good idea is if you have them why not use some old toys when you’re experimenting, This way you don’t ruin your newer ones, if your planning on doing a performance think about your surroundings, if your inside for instances you wont want loads of smoke so your best off using a cleaner fuel. Anyways i hope this answers some questions as i mentioned before im not to clued up on fuels so any additions would be welcomed, feel free to use the contact form or the forums to let us know!

Ever tried to merge the magic of photography and spirit of free hand painting? If you have you probably know all about the joy of ‘Light Painting’. Oh you haven’t done that yet? Then let me elaborate for you, ‘Light Painting’ is a photographic techniques where movement of light be it a light source such as a torch or the camera itself creates an image that looks like neon paintings on top of a photo image. You may not of realized it but you will most definitely have come across this before, the most common types of light paintings are based around a city landscape, mainly a busy road where the light streams of cars have passed by. I too wasn’t aware of Light Painting until recently in fact I only learned about it last week but I already know that it’s something that is out of this world.I just want to start this by saying I’m one of those types who like art and think it’s amazing, but then when I give it a try… Let’s just say if I was 6 it still wouldn’t be allowed to be pinned up on the fridge. That kinda put’s it off, well okay I suck at that so I’ll do something else and forget about it. Then when I saw Light Painting the first time… I’ll be honest I stared in awe for nearly 10 minutes and I was so close to not giving it a second thought but just looking at the intensity… the passion leaking from this picture… I knew I had to give it a go… So I searched my house, looked under piles and piles of crap… and had no luck finding a camera… But it’s so easy (so long as you have a camera…) You don’t have to have a gallery in London or a degree in photography, it’s as simple as A-B-C. Firstly you will need some basic requirements; A camera (for obvious reasons), a light source and a dark area, whether that is outside in a forest or in a dark room. By holding down the capture button, the shutter stays open longer and captures more light, by moving this light it captures the light from where it starts to where it finishes. This results in movement of the light and the awesome visuals. One thing that should be noted though is you will require a good camera, not a disposable one or the one in your phone. What makes Light Painting even greater is that this light source can be as simple as the emergency torch for black outs or as epic as the mind shredding shock and awe of Poi or Fire Play. It can be as simplistic as a smiley face or as thrilling as the reconstruction of the Golden Gate Bridge. Doing the latter is not as impossible as it seems, the great thing about light art is you can reconstruct any visible image into this neon infused super being. By taking a model and then painting them with light, you could paint a human orange essentially! It would be awesome to see some of your creations and in turn over the next coming weeks I’ll promise to dig out a camera from somewhere and get one done! Look’s like the spot light has gone dim and the shutter has been closed, this article has just been captured. Laters!

As a child i was never safety conscious and i mean not what so ever, To be honest not much has changed, I’m older, apparently wiser and still a bit of a jack ass which is probably the reason i hastily bit the bullet and tried my hand at fire spinning… Like most first timers i didn’t know what the hell I was doing so I simply grabbed some cheap flammable white spirit, dipped my toys, sparked them, then spun them around and at that particular moment in time it was good enough…. Now a few months down the line, only having them on fire a few times and being restricted by only knowing some basic moves, I decided it would definitely be beneficial to me and my readers if i found a get together of some more experienced flame heads and attended simply to learn by watching them, luckily enough for me i found one with relative ease and even better it wasn’t too far away. You’ve got to understand that this website is not so much about what i know but more about what im learning as time goes by, so anyways on arrival at this gathering i was greeted by the organisers, a group of performers who go by the name firepoise, they are based around northern Ireland and aswell as throwing the odd workshops they perform at all kinds of events - you can go to their website to find out more, anyways i was given the option to flame up or just spin some practice poi, naturally i brought along my own equip so i was definitely going to have a play. Dipping my wicks in a large bucket of paraffin i then proceeded to light and spin my poi, without hesitation one of the organisers requested that i used the spin bucket which is basically just a little bucket you place your poi in and then spin around first to help remove any excess fuel, something i had never done before, it then dawned on me how extremely safety conscious these guys were. Looking around the place i noticed not only spin bucket’s but damp towels, fire extinguishers and blankets and even a first aid kit, something ill admit at the time i foolishly thought was a bit excessive for such a small workshop of people, i like most people had the thought of “it’s not going to happen to me” something thank god hasn’t happened yet! The workshop its self was more than enjoyable, but a welcomed learning curve with the girls even performing one of their new routines for an upcoming event which was really very impressive and i think more so as you could see the pure enjoyment on their faces. any who a few days later i got talking to a spinner from germany and he gave me a few links of fire performing gone wrong, and boom it hit me maybe not the first video as the guy was spinning and didn’t realise his hat was on fire which yes i may have chuckled at, just to note – The guy was fine and no harm was done, he quickly put it out as soon as he noticed it a few minutes later but im guessing his hat wasnt so lucky. After seeing a few more videos it really did dawn on me how dangerous the fire arts really can be, not only to your self but those around you, some of these video’s shown both amazing and professional performers who admittedly just had some bad luck with accidents they could not of foreseen, but the majority just showed me a lack in any kind of safety precautions which could have effectively dealt with some of these situations much faster, a perfect example of this is the video below of a girl performing in Russia although not an actual spinning mistake the wind changed direction and in a panic she runs into the crowd. Hearing these types of story’s and even seeing some of the video’s, although not actually discouraging me has definitely brought home the realisation that yes, fire is dangerous and it doesn’t matter how good you think you are or whether you think it’s not going to happen to you, shit does happen and this is something you should always have in the back of your mind because essentially you are playing with fire so you should expect to be burned. Looking back over some of the first few times i spun my fire toys im ashamed to say i really did not give it a thought and especially with one occasion in mind i didn’t only put myself in real danger but those around me, im not going to get into that one as it would probably result in a few performers i know back handing me, but anyways i am happy to be able to say now that even when spinning in my back yard i am taking every precaution possible just in case the worse does indeed happen. For any of you other back yard party trick spinners i suggest you not take my word for it, but take the time to look into it your self, you can find plenty of videos and articles on this subject all over the web, a good place to start is watching this video! I will continue to post on this site as i learn myself and hopefully be able to bring it all back with me for you guys to read – so stay tuned you can be sure there’s much more to come on this subject.

Now this is not something i personally wrote but a friend of mine the absolute legend posted it on Facebook and it had me in hysterics so naturally i had to post it here for you guys to read as well – so enjoy! The real story behind the rugrats! ——————————————————————– The Rugrats unfortunately really were nothing more than a figment of the little girl angelica’s imagination, Chuckie actually died a long time ago along with this mother; that’s why Chaz is a nervous wreck all the time, Tommy was a stillborn; and that’s why Stu is constantly in the basement making toys for the son who never had a chance to live. The DeVilles had an abortion, but angelica couldn’t figure whether it would be a boy or a girl, thus creating the twins. As for “All Grown Up,” Angelica was a bipolar schizophrenic, who, as a teenager, became addicted to various narcotics, bringing her back to her childhood, thus creating a world in her mind that she obsessed over. Because of the time-lapse between the present and the last time she interacted with her imaginary world, she made them older. Angelica was constantly taking hits of acid so she would never have to live without her creations. To her, her creations were her only company in a judgemental world. Angelica’s mom actually died of a heroin overdose. Angelica was schizophrenic and bipolar because she was a crack baby. Additionally, Drew, in his depression, married a gold digging whore that Angelica idolized because she fooled herself into thinking it was her real mom. However, she always had a concept of her mom, Cynthia. She used a barbie doll to mirror her birth mother’s image–wearing an unwashed orange dress and jacked up hair–which is why she was so attached to it. Later in life she followed in her mother’s footsteps, dying of overdose at age 13 when All Grown Up! was “cancelled.” The only rugrat not to be fictional however, was unborn Tommy’s brother, Dil. However, Angelica didn’t know the difference between Dil and her creations. Dil didn’t follow her commands and after endless crying and a refusal to disappear like the others did when Angelica was angry with them, so she hit him. After she hit him, he screamed a screeching tune, and Stu ran in and pulled his niece off of his only child, but it was too late. Dil had a brain hemorrhage, which resulted in a deformation. As he grew up, his damage only became more evident, and by the time he was 9 in All Grown Up! he lived as an outcast, being ridiculed for his weirdness and retardation. The immense guilt over this is what caused Angelica to start using drugs, and to un-create the rugrats briefly, until her experience with hallucinogens. Chaz lost his mind after the death of his first wife and was in denial that she was ever a prostitute. On a trip to Paris to find love, Chaz fell in love with a hooker named Kira (He was originally going to marry a different hooker, but she just wanted him for his money). Kira once had a daughter named Kimi, but the baby was torn from her by law due to her cocaine addiction. (Angelica imagined Kimi from Kira’s stories.) Upon return to America, Chaz and Kira married and she got her green card. It was a surprisingly happy and romantic story. Kira continually struggled with addiction, but was relatively happy with her new life with Chaz. Suzie was Angelica’s only friend, who entertained the thought of Angelica’s creations because they seemed to make her happy. She later became a psychologist and teamed up with Nickelodeon to make the Rugrats. When Angelica died of the overdose, Suzie helped arrange her funeral. Because of her addictions and her mental state, Angelica was expelled from society, which lead to a break with reality and her eventual death. She spent the last days of her life in the back of the school cafeteria, imagining friends around her and playing with the lives of her creations.

Hey people we have something special for you today! now this is not just one of our run of the mill post’s, you may of in fact noticed that we reference this post quite often, that is because yes although this was originally just to enlighten you folks on the danger of the fire arts, we have so much admiration for this women especially as she is still performing we found it necessary to add this post to the artist appreciation section as well. ———————————————————– We highly suggest that anybody involved in or thinking about getting involved in the fire arts watch the following video before they go any further with it! Please do not think that just because we have posted this video we are warning you away from the fire arts because that’s not it at all, we are just simply suggesting that when ever anybody plays with fire they should gain as much knowledge as possible before continuing to do so. When practicing the fire arts, you should always be conscious of not only your own safety but also the people around you,be aware of the consequences if anything does indeed go wrong, as this video shows Pele was obviously well-trained and knew what she was doing but things unfortunately do go wrong and can even have effects of things you could not of imagined, so please think first and just be aware of what you may be getting yourself into, playing with fire is extremely dangerous. Now we are going to attempt to contact Pele and ask her a few of our own questions but if for what ever reason we fail to do so, we would like to thank her for this video and we hope she is well and we wish her nothing but luck for all her future endeavors.
